We've started our annual vertical mowing practice this spring. This is an important practice the helps to reduce the thatch that lies between the root zone and turf leaves. Thatch is a thick dense layer of dead roots and debris that accumulates over time. Removing thatch will increase air movement in the soil which will help promote faster growth after winter. Water infiltration is also increased which helps the roots retain moisture. Nutrients also become more available with decreased thatch; this improves plant health and turfgrass conditions.

Once the verti-cutting process is completed, we topdress the fairways heavily to incorporate more sand into the upper soil profile and to help reduce future thatch accumulation. The spring verti-cutting and topdressing of our fairways plays a large role in maintaining firm fairway surfaces and optimizes playability.
